Going ‘Viral’ can have a big impact on your blog but you definitely need to be ready for it. It’s hard to tell what type of post will get picked up and shared over and over again but there are some actions you might not have thought about taking once you go viral. Here is my list of 5 things you should do if your blog post goes viral.
1. Check The Post
Once you notice your hits climbing at a rapid pace you need to go back and re-read through your blog post. Make sure that there aren’t any rushed spelling mistakes, and if you can, ask someone else to proof read your post for you. If you’re going to have a sudden influx of hits you want everything to look professional (You don’t know who might stumble upon it).
2. Social Links
If you haven’t made sure before, now is a good time to check your social media links are clearly visible and are working. You want people to be able to easily find you on other platforms so make sure to include your social media links in your sidebar, header or at the bottom of the post.
3. Links Links Links
Once people have found your blog post they will often just read the article they were directed to and then leave the page. You want to keep that user on your blog for as long as possible. A good way of doing this is linking to other relevant posts in the current post so that you are guiding them to other articles you think might interest them. Internal links also help with your blog’s ranking and can improve your domain authority so it’s best practice to do this regularly in all your posts.
4. Monetize It
A sudden surge of views is an opportunity to make some money. Depending on the content you have written about you could add affiliate links to your post so that if anyone clicks or purchases through your link you will make a small commission. Having a lot more views than normal gives you a higher chance of a conversion rate and ability to make money from your content. Some of my favourite affiliate programmes are Affiliate Window and Shop Style Collective.
5. Sign Them Up
If you haven’t already started a weekly or monthly newsletter now would be a good time to create one. People are interested in the content you have written and that’s great but you want them to keep coming back. Giving the reader the opportunity to sign up to a newsletter is a great way to stay in touch with them and to drop them an email reminder about new posts you have written.
