Four months ago myself and my boyfriend Gavin put an offer in on a house and finally after a long slightly stressful process we finally have the keys in our hands. Unlike most first time buyers we haven’t bought a house we can move into straight away, we have instead purchased a serious renovation project. I really wanted to vlog the whole house fixing up process but I feel like an utter twat trying to film myself so I’m going to try and blog about it instead.
The house we have bought is currently a 2 bedroom detached property riddled with dry rot and infested with spiders. The plan is, with the help of a large extension and a lot of manpower, to turn the property into the 5 bedroom home of our dreams. We collected the keys Wednesday afternoon and went straight to see the house. Looking at it again and now with a mortgage to pay on it it’s really dawned on me just how big a project this is going to be. The house is currently uninhabitable and we are aiming to make it habitable in around 6 months time although I can see it being longer. It’s also quite frustrating that there is going to be very little I can do for a long time as I have a bad neck and back and won’t be able to help with much of the physical work, I think I’ll mainly be on lunch run duties and I guess I’ll finally have to learn how to make a cup of tea. The things I can do though will be purchasing goods, hiring contractors, sending off planning applications and generally things that can be done via the phone or the internet. Gavin has already drawn plans for our future home and I have been busy pinning away on Pinterest the ‘look’ I am going for.
I’m hoping to write a few posts over the coming months showing the progress we are making and document the journey (seeing as vlogging really isn’t for me) and I’m also planning to write some posts to help first time buyers and anyone looking to buy a home. I have both house purchasing and rental property experience as I used to work for an Estate Agents so I’m going to use my knowledge in that field to put into blog posts about home buying with an insight into both sides of a property purchase. Buying a home is usually one of the biggest purchases you will make in your lifetime so you definitely need to have some knowledge about what to ask and look out for.
If you have any questions you want answered or topics you would like me to cover in this home renovation series then let me know in the comments.
