It’s been a long time since I went on a first date but I do remember just how scary they can be and how nervous I used to get before meeting someone. You hope you like this person, and they hope they like you. They probably have a preconceived notion in their head of what this date will be like, and so do you. If they don’t live up to your expectations, it can be easy to get discouraged and put off dating. Finding the right person can take a lot of frog kissing. However, for now, focus on having a successful first date that’s not awkward at all. Use these tips to make it a success:
Meet Somewhere Non Threatening
Some environments are much scarier than others for a first date. For instance, going for food can be really intimidating, and there isn’t a very easy way to make your exit. By going for a drink or coffee instead, you’ll be able to get to know this person better. If you don’t like it, then you can make your excuses and leave! When you know each other a little better, you can look at going fun days out for couples.
Think of Some Things to Talk About Beforehand
If you’re scared there will be awkward silences, think of some things to talk about beforehand. Think of questions to ask them, and ways to strike up conversation. Try not to ask them things that will only get you yes or no answers. Ask questions that encourage them to elaborate where possible.
Look Your Best (But Don’t Try too Hard)
You want to look your best, but you don’t want to try too hard. Your outfit should be comfortable, casual, but classy. It depends on where you’re going, but getting dressed up to the nines might give off the wrong impression. I would opt for some skinny jeans, dolly shoes and a nice top.
Just Be Yourself
Being yourself is essential. Don’t try to be anything because you think this person will like it. Just be you, and if they like that, it’s a bonus! They’ll find out eventually anyway, so you might aswell let them find out now.
Watch Your Body Language
Your body language says a lot about you. Try to avoid folding your arms, as this looks unfriendly. Also try to make eye contact, but not too much. Most importantly, smile! Smiling shows you’re friendly and relaxed. Avoid touching your hair, face, or clothes too much as you’ll look uncomfortable.
Take some deep breaths and relax. Don’t over think things. They’re a normal person just like you. At the very least, you’ll learn something from this experience!
Talk About Positive Things
Avoid negative conversations, like about how much you hate your job or your ex. Keep the conversation positive and you’ll both like each other a lot more!
Don’t Get Drunk
Getting drunk means your inhibitions are lowered. You might give out way more information than necessary, or make a fool of yourself. Be sensible!
Finally, be honest. Don’t be tempted to lie to get this person to like you! You’ll get caught out, and that’ll be very embarrassing.
