Stressing is a terrible thing. Some people are chronic stressors. Other people only get stressed occasionally, but it can still have a big impact on your day. Feeling stresses can lead us to over or under eat, get a low quality sleep, and over-think things until we’re blue in the face. With that in mind, I’d like to share with you how I like to relax when I’m feeling a little stressed. I hope my tips help you!
Take Plenty of Deep, Calming Breaths
Many people don’t realise that breathing is actually a fantastic way to relax. By simply using your breath to calm yourself, you should feel much better about a situation in no time at all. The key is to take a big breath in through your nose, and then breath out through your mouth. Do this at least 10 times, or as many times as you need to feel de-stressed. This is something I always forget to do!
Try to Put Your Worry Into Perspective
Most of the time, the things we worry about are really irrelevant. Try to put your worry into perspective. How likely is it that this will happen? How many things that you’ve worried about have happened? Look at the bigger picture and think logically. My boyfriend’s current favourite word to use when I’m all stressed out is ‘rationalize’.
Get Some Exercise
Getting out in the fresh air or heading to the gym for a quick go on the running machine is a great way to relieve stress. By focusing your energy on something else it will help you to calm down and release some tension. Even a brisk walk can make a huge difference!
Drink Plenty of Tea or Water
Some teas are great for de-stressing. Ideally, you want one that doesn’t contain caffeine, as this can stimulate you and make you worry more. Try to drink a couple of cups of water a day and see how much better you feel afterwards.
Take a Long, Hot Bath
I love taking a long hot bath when I feel stressed. I like to add some bath salts, and maybe even a product from Lush if I want it to be extra special. When I’m done, I like to have one of my luxury bath robes on hand to make me feel like I’m in a spa.
Listen to Some Calming Music/Sounds
Music has a great way of making me feel better. I like to put on some calming music, or even some nature sounds to help me relax. Sometimes, I even do this when I’m in the bath.
Avoid Electronics, Especially Before Bed
Electronics stimulate us too, so try to avoid them if you already feel stressed. TV, mobile phones, the lot! If you struggle to sleep, don’t use them before bed. You should have at least an hour where you don’t use electronics so you can sleep soundly.
Read a Good Book
A good book always helps me to relax – a bit like an escape! Get into the habit of reading and see if you feel any better. You could even read a self help book on reducing stress.
