Does Money make People Happy - The Perfect World Project

Does money make people happy? It’s always been a question I have wondered about. I’ve always imagined all the amazing things I would do, buy and see if I suddenly won a vast sum of money. I’ve planned it in detail in my mind and all the visions I have are certainly of me in an ecstatic mood.

The Perfect World Project are planning to put this to the test as part of a reality TV series and social experiment. They are looking for 10 people to sign up who will be set challenges to complete and the overall winner of the series will win a ‘VIP concierge Perfect World card loaded with a six figure sum. They’ll then have three months to get stuck into everything their ‘perfect world’ has to offer – whether it’s a single destination or travelling around the globe they’ll have the chance to experience VIP treatment and find out; does money make you happy?’

I’ve jumped on board to give my opinion on the big question of: Does Money Make You Happy?

If I suddenly won a six figure sum of money the first thing I would do is a book a two week holiday to Disneyland Florida. I’d visit all the parks and pay for the VIP experience where you get to jump the queue on every ride! I’d buy obligatory Minnie Mouse ears and wear them with pride every single day. I’d eat out every evening and not worry about not being able to afford dessert. I’d buy an extra suitcase to bring home and fill it with all the amazing makeup and clothing products that we can’t get here in the UK. Would all of this make me happy? Hell Yes it would!

I’d return home and buy a house, a mini cooper covertible, a french bulldog and a micro pig. All of which I have dreamt about and I know would make me happy, but how long would this happiness last?

Currently my emotions are all over the place, I can go from being insanely happy and bouncing around the place to slumped up in my bed feeling sorry for myself. Of course a cute dog bounding up to me licking my face in the mornings would make me happy but I don’t think it’s an emotion you can sustain with any amount of money.

I think money can make you happy for a period of time, you can indulge and splurge and feel high and euphoric about all the new purchases you have but eventually that emotion will fade and then you will need to buy something new to feel that happy high again. If money was no object I’m sure life would be grand but unless you had people to share it with that would also be able to spend and splurge the way you do then it would probably be quite lonely too.

So Does Money Make You Happy? My answer is Yes and No. I think Money can buy you things that make you happy but isn’t something that can constantly keep you happy.

I agree with you. It would be nice to have all the luxury's we have only dreamt about but nothing beats intangible factors that truly gives us satisfaction and fulfilment.

I would definitely be similar to you- if I won a LOT of money I'd love to visit all 6 Disney parks, but you would still come home to the same problems no matter how much money you had. I think you only have to look at celebs who have more money than most of us could ever dream of, but they still face the same ups and downs that life throws at all of us. Having money contributes to happiness but it's not the be all and end all! It's an interesting thing to think about though!
